Halfway through our year we like to send out a reminder of our traffic procedures that keep our kids safe and our traffic flowing smoothly during drop off and pick up. We thank you all for helping to keep our kids out of harms way.

In particular we’d like to ask that children not be dropped off or picked up in the middle of the car line but only with one of our volunteers up at the head of the line at school. We would also like to stress that our traffic helpers in the orange vests are volunteers and appreciate your patience and assistance.

Look for the orange Traffic Safety Reminder sheet going home with your child this week and drive safely!

BOUNDARY CHANGE MEETING

Tuesday, February 2 at 6:30 PM in the John Rogers cafeteria, Child care provided

The boundaries for the John Rogers attendance area are set to change for the 2017 school year.   This change will affect many of our current families as well as our neighbors at Olympic Hills Elementary and Cedar Park Elementary (to open in 2017).     John Rogers could be impacted directly through displaced teachers, reduction in support staff and support services.   It appears approximately three out of ten families would be reassigned due to the boundary change with no consideration for grandfathering in current students.   The boundary change will assign a disproportionally high number of low income students at Cedar Park, as a brand new elementary.

Flip Herndon, Associate Superintendent of Capital Facilities and Ashley Davies, Director of Enrollment and Planning, from the Seattle School District will be present to provide information about the upcoming change and to answer questions from our community.

Please join us for this important conversation!

What’s going on in Music & P.E. at John Rogers??

-In P.E. we are just finishing up a 2 week bowling unit. The students each took turns with 4 different jobs: Bowler, Pin Setter, Ball Returner & Score Keeper. Grades 2-5 learned how to keep score by adding pins for each frame & had to learn that a strike is worth 10 points plus the next 2 balls rolled & a spare is 10 points plus the next ball rolled. Ask your student why a “Turkey” is called a turkey in bowling!! For the next couple of weeks, we will be goal setting for our fitness test scores, as well as integrating Nutrition based games and activities. Grades K-1 will be working on fitness testing, as well as games & activities that integrate Sight Words! Go Hawks! J~Mrs. Blumhagen

-There is lots of big news in music for 2016! First, we received a $2,000 grant to buy a classroom set of ukuleles for the music room and are in the process of ordering them for an upcoming ukulele unit for fourth and fifth graders!! Second, we welcomed student teacher Emily Nelson. She is studying to become a music teacher at Seattle Pacific University and is a wonderful musician, adding her guitar, piano, and voice skills to our classroom. All students have been focusing on the songs of the civil rights movement this January and will be sharing some at our January spirit assembly on Friday, the 15th.-Mrs. Trinneer
